Akshaya Tritiya 2025: The Most Auspicious Day for New Beginnings

All about Akshaya Tritiya — why this Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya is considered the most auspicious day of the year, what 'Akshaya' means, why gold is bought, and what you should do on this day.

Akshaya Tritiya (also written as Akha Teej) falls on the third day (Tritiya) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of Vaishakha month. 'Akshaya' means 'inexhaustible' or 'that which never diminishes' — and this is the essence of the day. According to Hindu tradition, any good deed done on Akshaya Tritiya yields permanent, inexhaustible merit. It is one of only three or four days in the Hindu calendar that are considered swayam-siddha muhurthams — auspicious in themselves without needing to check the Panchangam for additional conditions.

Why Akshaya Tritiya is So Significant

Several divine events are associated with Akshaya Tritiya: it is the birth anniversary of the sixth avatar of Vishnu, Parashurama; the day Goddess Annapoorna appeared with her bowl of inexhaustible food; the day the Treta Yuga began; and most importantly for Telugu households, the day when Yudhishthira received the Akshaya Patra — the divine vessel that provided unlimited food for the Pandavas during their forest exile. Any act of giving (charity, annadanam, donations) done on this day is believed to multiply a thousandfold.

Gold, Investments, and New Beginnings

The tradition of buying gold on Akshaya Tritiya is widespread and commercially significant. Gold purchased on this day is believed to grow and multiply — it does not diminish. This belief, while traditional in origin, aligns with the general wisdom of accumulating wealth on an auspicious day. Beyond gold, Akshaya Tritiya is ideal for: starting a new business, signing important documents or property deals, beginning construction of a home, making new investments, and starting any venture you want to grow perpetually.

How to Observe the Day

The puja on Akshaya Tritiya involves worshipping Lord Vishnu (as he is the deity of preservation and abundance) with Tulasi leaves, yellow flowers, and fruits. Annadanam (offering food to others) is the most meritorious act of the day. Many families cook large amounts of food and serve it at temples or to those in need. Bathing in a sacred river or tirtha on this day is considered equivalent to bathing on every sacred day of the year. A Lakshmi Puja in the evening completes the observance.
