Guna Milan is the traditional Vedic system of matching horoscopes for marriage, based on the birth stars (Nakshatras) of the prospective bride and groom. It is also called Ashtakoota Milan — 'matching of eight factors' — because compatibility is scored across eight kootas (categories), which together carry a maximum of 36 points, or gunas. The higher the score, the greater the traditional compatibility.
The Eight Kootas
The eight kootas and their maximum points are: Varna (1) — spiritual compatibility; Vashya (2) — mutual attraction and control; Tara or Dina (3) — health and wellbeing; Yoni (4) — physical and sexual compatibility; Graha Maitri or Rasyadhipati (5) — mental and psychological harmony; Gana (6) — temperament (deva, manushya, rakshasa); Bhakoot or Rasi (7) — love, family, and prosperity; and Nadi (8) — health and genes. Adding the maximums gives 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8 = 36 gunas.
What Score Is Acceptable
As a general guideline, a total below 18 out of 36 is considered a poor match, 18 to 24 is acceptable, 24 to 32 is very good, and above 32 is excellent. However, the raw number is only the starting point — the distribution across the kootas and the presence of specific doshas matter more than the total alone. A match of 30 with a serious dosha may be weaker than a match of 22 without one.
Nadi and Bhakoot Dosha
Two doshas carry special weight. Nadi dosha occurs when the couple share the same Nadi (out of Aadi, Madhya, Antya) and is associated in tradition with health and progeny concerns — being the highest-scored koota, it is treated seriously, though several cancellation conditions exist. Bhakoot dosha arises from certain unfavourable distances between the Moon signs (such as 6–8 or 2–12) and is linked to family harmony and prosperity. Both can be cancelled under specific conditions, which a careful reading checks.
Beyond the Score
Guna Milan is a valuable first filter, but a complete matching also considers Mangal Dosha, the strength of the 7th house, the Dasha periods of both partners, and the Navamsa (D9) chart. Mana Panchangam's matchmaking computes all 36 gunas across the eight kootas, checks Mangal and Nadi/Bhakoot doshas with their cancellations, and presents a full compatibility report — a far more complete picture than a single number.
