No House Is Ever Truly Empty
Open most Kundali charts and you'll see several houses with no planets in them at all. It's tempting to read those as blank — but in Vedic astrology, every house is governed by a ruling planet, its lord, determined by which Rashi (zodiac sign) occupies that house. Even with zero planets physically present, the house lord's placement, strength, and dignity elsewhere in the chart tells you a great deal about that house's themes.
How a House Gets Its Lord
Each of the 12 signs has exactly one classical ruling planet — Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, Venus rules Taurus and Libra, Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, the Moon rules Cancer, the Sun rules Leo, Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces, and Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius (Rahu and Ketu are never sign lords in the classical system). Whichever sign falls in a given house from your Lagna determines that house's lord. For example, if your Lagna is Simha (Leo), your 7th house falls in Kumbha (Aquarius), making Saturn your 7th house lord — the planet whose placement says the most about your marriage and partnerships.
A Strong Example: 7th Lord and Marriage
The 7th house governs marriage and partnerships. If nothing sits in your 7th house, that doesn't mean marriage is a blank slate in your chart — it means you read your 7th lord instead. A 7th lord that's exalted or in its own sign, placed in a strong house, points to a fortunate, stable partnership even without any planet physically occupying the 7th. A weak or afflicted 7th lord, on the other hand, suggests more effort or patience may be needed in that area — information you'd completely miss by looking at the 7th house alone.
The Strongest Placement: A Lord in Its Own House
When a house's lord actually sits within that very house — its own domain — classical astrology treats this as a particularly well-anchored, auspicious placement. A Lagna lord seated in the Lagna itself, for instance, is considered to give a strong, well-defined sense of self and direction. This is one reason a planet's house placement and its lordship role are both worth tracking together, not separately.
Now Built Into Your Mana Pandit Reading
Mana Pandit's Kundali Interpretation engine automatically computes your Lagna lord, 7th lord, 10th lord, 2nd lord, and 11th lord, and weaves their placement directly into your Personality, Relationship, Career, and Financial sections — alongside whatever planets are physically sitting in those houses.
