What Is a Jathakam?
A jathakam (జాతకం) is a Vedic birth chart — a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment and place of your birth. It maps the positions of the nine planets (Navagrahas) across the twelve houses (Bhavas), forming the foundation of Jyotish astrology. Unlike Western astrology, Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac (fixed stars), making the jathakam highly precise when the correct birth time is known.
The South Indian Chart Format
Telugu jathakams traditionally use the South Indian square chart format. It consists of twelve fixed boxes arranged in a 4×4 grid with the centre blank. The signs (Rashis) always remain in the same boxes — Aries is always top-row second from left, and they proceed clockwise. Planets are written inside the box of the sign they occupy at birth. This fixed-sign format makes it easy to spot planetary positions at a glance.
Understanding the Twelve Houses
Each house governs a specific life domain. The Lagna (Ascendant) is the most critical — it is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth and becomes your first house. Houses 1–12 cover: self/personality, wealth/family, siblings/communication, home/mother, children/creativity, health/service, marriage/partnerships, longevity/transformation, dharma/higher learning, career/father, gains/networks, and losses/liberation respectively.
Reading Planetary Strengths
Planets behave differently depending on the sign they occupy. A planet in its own sign (Swagraha) or exaltation (Uchcha) is strong and gives good results. A planet in debilitation (Neecha) is weakened. For example, Sun is exalted in Aries and debilitated in Libra. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer. Knowing which planets are strong in your jathakam tells you where life will flow easily and where effort is needed.
