Maha Shivaratri 2025: The All-Night Vigil for Lord Shiva

A guide to Maha Shivaratri — why Shiva is worshipped through the night, the four praharams of puja, how to fast, what to offer, and the significance of Bilva leaves.

Maha Shivaratri — the Great Night of Shiva — is observed on the fourteenth day of the waning moon (Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi) in Magha month. The night is deeply sacred for several reasons: it is the night when Lord Shiva performed the Tandava (cosmic dance of creation and destruction), the night of his wedding with Goddess Parvati, and also the night when Shiva manifested as the Jyotirlinga (pillar of light) to settle the dispute between Brahma and Vishnu. Staying awake all night (Jagarana) and worshipping Shiva is the central practice.

The Four Praharamas of Puja

The night is divided into four Praharams (watches of about three hours each), and a separate Abhishekam is ideally performed in each. First Praharam: Milk (Ksheera Abhishekam — for purity and blessings). Second Praharam: Curd (Dadhi Abhishekam — for longevity). Third Praharam: Ghee (Ghrita Abhishekam — for prosperity). Fourth Praharam: Honey with water (Madhu Abhishekam — for liberation). Bilva (Bael) leaves are the most sacred offering — Shiva is said to be pleased by just one Bilva leaf offered with devotion.

How to Fast and What to Avoid

The fast begins the previous evening and is maintained through the night and the next day until the puja concludes. Devotees consume only fruits, milk, and water. Rice and regular grains are avoided. Onion, garlic, and non-vegetarian food are strictly prohibited. Many devotees visit the Shiva temple at the time of each Praharam for the Abhishekam darshan. The Panchakshara mantra (Om Namah Shivaya) is the primary mantra chanted throughout.

Shivaratri in Andhra Pradesh and Srisailam

The Srisailam Mallikarjuna Swamy temple in Nandyal district is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines of India and receives lakhs of devotees on Maha Shivaratri. The darshan queues at Srisailam can stretch for 10–20 hours on this day. For those who cannot travel, conducting Rudra Abhishekam at home with a qualified pandit is an equally devout alternative. A home Maha Shivaratri puja with Rudra Abhishekam takes 2–3 hours and can be arranged through Mana Pandit.
