Vaikasi Visakha is observed on the full moon day of the Tamil month of Vaikasi (corresponding to Vaishakha in Telugu/Sanskrit) when the Moon is in the Visakha nakshatra — typically in May or early June. It is celebrated as the birthday (Jayanti) of Lord Murugan (Subramanya/Karthikeya), the son of Shiva and Parvati. Visakha (also called Vishakha) is the nakshatra sacred to both Indra and Agni, and is considered particularly auspicious for the birth of Murugan, who is the commander of the divine army and the embodiment of divine power and grace.
Murugan's Birth and the Significance of Visakha
According to the Skanda Purana, Lord Murugan was born specifically on the Visakha nakshatra. He was created from six divine sparks that emerged from Shiva's third eye, which then fell into the Saravana lake and became six babies, later merging into the six-headed Shanmukha. The Visakha nakshatra is a 'forked' star — its symbol is a branching tree or a potter's wheel — representing potential energy held at the moment before release. Murugan's birth on this nakshatra connects him to the cosmic energy of creation and decisive action. For devotees, a child born on Visakha nakshatra is considered to be blessed by Murugan.
How the Day is Celebrated
On Vaikasi Visakha, Subramanya temples conduct elaborate abhishekam (sacred bath) of the deity, followed by special alankara (decoration), processions, and Thiruvilakku (lamp) festivals. Devotees who observe a fast on this day are believed to receive Murugan's blessings for their children and for protection from enemies and obstacles. The vel (divine lance of Murugan) is worshipped. Many families whose children were born on Visakha nakshatra bring them to a Murugan temple on this day for a special blessing. Recitation of Kanda Sashti Kavacham and Kandhar Anubhuti (Tamil devotional poems) is common.
Vaikasi Visakha in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana
Subramanya worship has deep roots in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, particularly in the coastal and forest regions. The Kumara Brahma Subramanya Swamy temple at Ghantasala (Krishna district), the Sreerama Venkateswara temple at Swamimalai (connected to the Tamil Murugan tradition), and many other Subramanya temples in the Telugu states observe Vaikasi Visakha with special puja and processions. For Telugu Shaiva families, Vaikasi Visakha, Skanda Shashti, and Subramanya Shashti form the three main Murugan festivals of the year — and the birthday celebration on Vaikasi Visakha is the most personal and joyful of the three.
