Vaishakha Purnima: The Sacred Full Moon of May and Buddha Purnima

All about Vaishakha Purnima — the full moon of Vaishakha month, why it is one of the most auspicious nights of the year for charitable acts and river bathing, its significance as Buddha Purnima (the birth of Gautama Buddha), and how Telugu families observe it.

Vaishakha Purnima is the full moon day of the month of Vaishakha — typically falling in May. It is considered one of the most sacred full moon nights in the Hindu calendar, and the same day holds extraordinary importance in the Buddhist tradition as Buddha Purnima — the day when Siddhartha Gautama was born, attained enlightenment (at Bodh Gaya), and passed into Mahaparinirvana, all in different years but on the same lunar date. For Hindus, Vaishakha Purnima is a day of deep charity, river bathing, and Vishnu devotion.

The Month of Vaishakha and Vishnu

Vaishakha is considered especially sacred to Lord Vishnu in the Puranas. The entire month is a time for acts of charity (dana), fasting, river bathing, and temple visits. Vaishakha Purnima, as the culmination of this month, carries the highest merit. Sacred acts performed on this full moon — offering water to the thirsty, feeding the hungry, giving footwear or oil lamps to the needy, and taking a bath in a river before dawn — are said to yield the merit of a lifetime of charitable acts condensed into a single day. The Vaishakha Mahatmya (a text on the glory of Vaishakha) describes the month as the best of all months in the divine order.

Buddha Purnima: The Enlightenment of Siddhartha

For the world's Buddhist community, Vaishakha Purnima is Buddha Purnima — the holiest day of the Buddhist calendar. Tradition holds that Siddhartha Gautama was born in Lumbini (present-day Nepal) on this full moon; that he attained Nirvana under the Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya in Bihar on this same lunar date; and that he passed away (Mahaparinirvana) at Kushinagar also on this date. The convergence of all three events on a single date makes it the most significant day in Buddhism. In India, Buddhist sites like Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, and Kushinagar see large pilgrimages on this day.

Observances in Telugu Households

In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Vaishakha Purnima is observed with pre-dawn river bathing, Vishnu puja, and charitable acts. Households offer water to passers-by as symbolic dana (the gift of water in summer heat is highly meritorious in this month). Sesame, jaggery, and cool water are donated. Satyanarayan puja — a popular Vishnu vow ceremony — is commonly performed on Vaishakha Purnima, as the full moon is considered auspicious for this vrat. Moonrise on this night is particularly beautiful with the full moon in the summer sky, and families often spend the evening in prayer, storytelling, and together in the open air.
