What Is Vimshottari Dasha?
Vimshottari Dasha (విమ్శోత్తరి దశ) is the most widely used planetary period system in Vedic astrology. 'Vimshottari' means 120 in Sanskrit — the total cycle spans 120 years, divided among the seven classical planets and two lunar nodes (Rahu and Ketu). Each planet rules a major period (Mahadasha) of specific duration, and within each Mahadasha are sub-periods (Antardashas) and sub-sub-periods (Pratyantardashas). The system reveals when different planetary energies dominate your life.
The Nine Planetary Periods
The Mahadasha sequence and durations are: Ketu (7 years), Venus (20 years), Sun (6 years), Moon (10 years), Mars (7 years), Rahu (18 years), Jupiter (16 years), Saturn (19 years), Mercury (17 years). The sequence always follows this order, but you enter it at a point determined by the Nakshatra the Moon occupied at your birth. Your remaining years in that first Mahadasha are calculated proportionally.
How to Calculate Your Current Dasha
Your Dasha sequence begins from your birth Nakshatra. For example, if you were born in Ashwini Nakshatra (ruled by Ketu), you begin in Ketu Mahadasha. The fraction of Ketu Dasha remaining is calculated based on how far the Moon had traversed Ashwini at your birth moment. Each Mahadasha divides into 9 Antardashas (sub-periods), each ruled by the 9 planets in sequence. For instance, during Jupiter Mahadasha, you experience Jupiter-Ketu, Jupiter-Venus, Jupiter-Sun… and so on.
Reading Dasha Effects
During a planet's Mahadasha, its significations in your chart become prominent. A well-placed Jupiter Mahadasha often brings education, marriage, children, and spiritual growth. Saturn Mahadasha tests discipline, karma, and hard work but rewards perseverance. Rahu Mahadasha (18 years) brings ambition, unconventional paths, and sudden changes. The Antardasha lord modifies the main period — a Saturn Antardasha within a Rahu Mahadasha amplifies karmic lessons.
