Panguni Uttaram is observed on the full moon day of the Tamil month of Panguni (which corresponds to the Telugu/Sanskrit month of Phalguna) — typically falling in late March or early April. In the Tamil and Telugu Vaishnava and Shaiva traditions, Panguni Uttaram is one of the most auspicious full moon days of the year. 'Panguni' is the Tamil name for the Phalguna month, and 'Uttaram' refers to the Uttara Phalguni nakshatra (star) that the Moon occupies on this full moon. The convergence of the full moon and Uttara Phalguni nakshatra makes this a day associated with divine weddings.

The Day of Divine Weddings

Panguni Uttaram is considered the day when several major divine weddings took place in Hindu mythology. Lord Murugan (Subramanya) married his consort Devasena (Devayanai) on this day, and also accepted Valli as his second consort. Lord Vishnu is said to have married Goddess Lakshmi, and Shiva and Parvati are also associated with this auspicious nakshatra combination. Because of this, human weddings conducted on Panguni Uttaram are considered particularly auspicious — the date is one of the most sought-after in Telugu and Tamil wedding almanacs. The nakshatra Uttara Phalguni is itself the 'wedding star', associated with partnership and union.

Temple Celebrations

Panguni Uttaram is particularly significant at Murugan temples, where special Thirukalyanam (divine wedding) ceremonies are conducted. The deity is dressed as a bridegroom, and images of Devasena and Valli are placed beside him. Wedding rites — Mangalasutram tying, exchange of garlands, and recitation of wedding mantras — are performed for the deity. Major Murugan temples such as those in Tirupparankunram (near Madurai) and Palani conduct large multi-day festivals culminating on Panguni Uttaram. Vishnu temples in the Telugu regions hold the Kalyanotsavam (celestial wedding) of Vishnu and Lakshmi on this day as well.

Panguni Uttaram in Telugu Tradition

In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Panguni Uttaram is observed primarily at Subramanya (Murugan) temples and Vishnu temples. The month of Phalguna is a time of spring in the Telugu regions, with the Holi season and the approach of Ugadi. Panguni Uttaram near the Ugadi season makes it a time of celestial festivity in an already festive period.
